Builder Licensing:

All Residential Contractors MUST BE Licensed Effective July 1, 2008

  • July 1, 2008 marks the beginning of statewide licensing for those involved with contractor work relative to detached one & two family residences, townhouses, multifamily buildings as well as light commercial buildings.

  • Anyone securing a building permit for any of the previously mentioned contractor work will be required to have a Georgia license to obtain that permit on and after July 1, 2008.

  • Building officials who knowingly issue a permit for work requiring a licensed builder to an unlicensed individual are liable for a fine of up to $500.

  • All contracts made on and after July 1, 2008, for work that requires a licensed builder that is performed by unlicensed individuals will have no legal standing.  Consumers and unlicensed builders will be unprotected!

  • Specific information on licensing can be found on the Georgia Secretary of State's website at http://sos.georgia.gov/plb/contractors/default.htm.

  • To verify an individual's license, please see http://sos.georgia.gov/myverification/

Builder License Renewal Period Coming Soon:

At the Feb. 2 meeting of the Residential and General Licensing Board, the executive director announced her office is planning to send out license renewal notices in early March.

If licensees have provided and e-mail address to the board, they will receive a reminder.  If there is no e-mail address, a postcard will be sent to the address on file at the secretary of state's office.  However, the executive director cautioned that licenses must be renewed by the expiration date, regardless of whether notice is actually received from the licensing board.

The board has set fees for June 30 renewals as follows:

  • Renewal Fee - $100

  • Late Renewal Fee - $200 (July 1 to Dec. 31, 2010)

According to the board's Web site, renewals will be processed online.  If you do not have access for online processing, you must contact the board office at 478-207-2440 to request a paper renewal form.

Check the Secretary of State's Web site

http://sos.georgia.gov/plb/contractors/default.htm. for more information.
